You know those dorm/apartment rules like, “Don’t burn candles?” Talk about not realizing how much you miss something until it’s not there!
During college, I’ve so missed getting to burn candles in my room. Of course, forbidding open flames in a community dorm makes perfect sense. Still, I always miss the aesthetic, cozy environment candles create. I often turn to Scentsy wax warmers, which are a great compromise but just don’t feel the same.
If you’re a college student in the same scenario or simply wonder, “How can I make my house more ‘homey,’” you’re in the right place! Here are 6 non-flammable ways to create a cozy atmosphere. These do the trick for me when I want to make my dorm a happier, more welcoming space. Bonus: no flammable “warning advisory” needed!
P.S. shoutout to my Mom who always used to burn candles at home, signaling that it was a time for peace and relaxation. You inspired this post. <3
1. Salt lamps.
Do they actually have health benefits? No clue. At the end of a long day, however, it’s so nice to just relax, study, or write with the soft glow of a salt lamp in the background.
You can find some great salt lamp options here on Amazon.

2. A personalized “Coffee Shop” playlist.
I used this title for my Spotify playlist consisting of the most heartwarming, calming, and uplifting songs I came across. “Coffee shop” basically became its own genre in my music library. Whether I need background study music or simply want to add a relaxed tone, all of the perfect songs are already collected in one designated place.
3. Make your bed.
Such a small detail makes such a difference. A tidy bed is so nice to come back to after a long day, and it lessens the chaos you’re surrounded by in your own space. Even if it’s not perfect, who cares! It’s your space; you deserve to make it nice for you. Who makes the guidelines for bed requirements anyway?
4. A cup of tea or hot chocolate.
This one’s so fun because you really can treat yourself to whatever your favorite cozy drink is. The whole idea is to relax and take in the moment with all your senses – including taste.
Personally, I’ve been getting into the hot tea world. My all-time FAVORITE place to try out new tea flavors is The Spice and Tea Exchange. (Disclaimer: not sponsored.) They have a beautiful little storefront right in my college town, and it’s one of my favorite spots!

5. Wax warmers, air fresheners, or some type of scent.
One of my favorite non-flammable ways to create a cozy atmosphere! Like I said, wax warmers just aren’t the same, but they do the trick when it comes to cozy scents. It makes the room feel cleaner and more pleasant to spend time in. (I’d 10/10 recommend any fall scents.)
6. A (mostly) clean space.
We all have that corner pile of stuff we don’t know what to do with yet. Kinda like point #3, though, a clean space prevents a chaotic mind. What’s lying around that you can straighten in 10 minutes or less? If you’re sitting at your desk, just focus on that; if you’re chilling on the couch, just put away the big clutter. A peaceful space really DOES make a more peaceful mind (and it doesn’t have to take much time).
Once you try out new ways to create a welcoming environment, who knows… You may find that you enjoy the solo time in your own room or home more. A welcoming, personalized “corner of the world” can be one of the best motivators and encouragements that will support you through your endeavors. You may not even miss the classic, open-flame candles.
