If you’re a true Marvel fan, you’ll agree that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has an endless stream of memorable quotes. From humorous to sad to philosophical, some character always has input for any scenario. Upon deeper thought, though, these lines offer a healthy amount of true life advice, discussing sincerity in love, loyalty, and confidence, even when things don’t go as planned. Whether you need a pick-me-up or are simply curious about the philosophy behind the action, enjoy this collection of 10 Marvel Quotes to Base Your Life On. Besides, who doesn’t like life advice from a superhero?
P. S. The MCU is constantly expanding. This post revolves around quotes from phases 1-3 (MCU lingo), yet additional movies/shows brought more awesome quotes even since this post was written. Would you be interested in seeing a Part 2 to this post? Let me know!
1. “I am burdened with glorious purpose.”
Loki, The Avengers
You might think that a villain’s quote is an odd choice to open the article with, let alone base your life on! This one, however, is one of my favorite lines in the entire MCU and presents a deep thought process that’s worth looking into. Loki sets out to dominate earth, uttering these words to a group of people who question his motives. Although spoken by a villain, the words contain a true confidence that we all could take away from. Whatever you set out to do in life (with the exception, perhaps, of world-domination), make sure that you do it with absolute confidence in yourself and a sense of purpose. Not only will this come through in the efforts of your work, but it’ll push you onward through a fire in your core that says, “I won’t be trampled;” “I am burdened with glorious purpose.”
2. “And you think life takes more than it gives, but not today. Today it’s giving us something. It is giving us a chance.”
Peter Quill / Star Lord, Guardians of the Galaxy
There are some days where we don’t feel on-top-of-the-world; rather, we’re the ones Peter’s referring to when he says “you think life takes more than it gives.” In those times, we have to remember that a day will come when life gives us something new; a chance to do the right thing and to “not run away.” It’s okay to not feel heroic everyday; that makes us human. It’s remembering that tomorrow gives us another chance, however, that turns a surviving human into a hero.
3. “No amount of money ever bought a second of time.”
Tony Stark, Avengers: Endgame
Ironic that these word would come from a self-proclaimed billionaire (see Quote #9). On the other hand, perhaps it’s characters like Tony Stark who would truly know what money was capable of buying – time not being one of them. If he and his finances level under the concept of limited time, perhaps it’s worth the thought on our part to wonder what our time is allotting us. Moments are not for sale, but they are worthwhile.
4. “But a thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts. It’s a privilege to be among them.”
Vision, Avengers: Age of Ultron
Age and time was a new concept for the AI, Vision, to learn in Age of Ultron. As the ever-ticking clock counts down for the Avengers, hard concepts like mortality and mindset arise. Vision’s words here remind us that “a thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts;” rather, moments gain value when you realize the privilege in living among your fellow people at all. Even if it is all just temporary, awareness and gratitude for the journey that time’s allotted makes it all worthwhile.
5. “It’s not enough to be against something. You have to be for something better.”
Tony Stark, Captain America: Civil War
You might think by now that Tony Stark was the most philosophical member of the MCU. While that’s a matter of fan perspective, he is, no doubt, one of the most complex characters they’ve put effort into creating, and that shows through his words. Imagine the type of experiences someone would have to go through to realize being for something and being against something are two totally different things. You can’t just complain about everything you dislike or disagree with; you have to have a reason why and, oftentimes, an alternate stance that presents more hope or clarity than the widely-accepted “something.”
6. “In time, you will know what it’s like to lose; to feel so desperately that you’re right, yet to fail all the same. Dread it, run from it – destiny still arrives.”
Thanos, Avengers: Infinity War
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I condone Thanos’ mission here; his logic throughout these epic movies, however, is fascinating to say the least.
On the other hand, there’s something oddly comforting about the thought that an inevitable force such as destiny plays an overarching role in our lives. How stressful it would be to live thinking that we alone are responsible for the consequences of our actions.
7. “When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen… they happen because of you.”
Peter Parker, Captain America: Civil War
An innocent kid from Queens seems to have grasped the very foundation of heroism that others – Thor, Tony Stark, etc. – are still struggling to learn. Talents and abilities of any kind are a gift, and rarely are they meant to serve only the bearer. Sometimes, as Peter states, indifference is a choice against the greater good. And when the results of that choice turn sour, it’s only logical to conclude that the person responsible is you.
Abilities don’t make someone a hero; the choice of what to do with your gifts, does.
8. “And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.”
Steve Rogers / Captain America, Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This quote and the speech that precedes it are among the most empowering lines in the entire MCU. Go back and reread what Steve’s claiming here. Would you agree?
While so simple, these few words reveal a mentality that would change our world if we’d all adopt it: willingness to stand on our own, but the faith to bet that we won’t have to. How often we buy into the fear that we’re like an island, floating alone in the space of our own ideas and convictions. “Who else could possibly feel this way?” “No one else is saying anything.” Well, I’m sure that no one else was eager to risk their necks by announcing Hydra’s plan in the belly of a compromised base; yet, when one man stood up to take the risk, he inspired others to take a bold stance as well. Imagine what you could accomplish if you had the confidence to stand on your own, while maintaining the faith that there are others like you.
9. “Big man in a suit of armor. Take that away, and what are you?” – Steve Rogers
“Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.” – Tony Stark
The Avengers
While intended as a humorous spin on a tense moment, Tony’s instant response truly reveals his confidence – the surety that he is something more behind the armor. Although it’s no surprise that the genius’ eccentric pride shone through, there’s something to be said for his non-hesitancy as he states who he is.
If only we could all approach situations with the self-confidence Tony brings to every moment. While pride is repeatedly his downfall, the honest sense that he’s more than his machines urges him on in low times. Tony’s story reminds us that a deep confidence in who we are and what we have to offer will push us onward, no matter what – or who – we’re confronted by.
10. “You don’t think they need me?” – Clint Barton
“I think they do… which is a lot scarier.” – Laura Barton
Avengers: Age of Ultron
No matter what people say, I’ll always believe that Clint Barton was the glue that held the Avengers together. That’s beside the point, though.
This deeply vulnerable conversation is often overlooked but truly overarches the entire franchise. Codependence is the foundation of the Avengers – and our modern society. Codependence, or needing someone, however, requires trust and vulnerability. That can be even scarier than facing the obstacles right in front of you. In the end, however, what do you gain? As Clint discovers (both by being a part and by losing them), you gain lifelong connections, support, and friends who become family.
BONUS #11: “That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done – and because it is the right thing to do – is indeed, without a doubt, a superhero.”
Stan Lee, creator of Marvel Comics
‘Nough said.
